Good Morning, Cowboys and Cowgirls!

Welcome to week 3 of our 16-week scavenger hunt challenge series to de-clutter your space!  You’re well on your way to taming the wild west of your clutter; Your medicine and first aid supplies are in order and ready for sniffle season, and your cords are corralled so that you can easily find the wires, chargers, and electronic accessories for your current devices. This week we’re taking the treasure hunt to the best room of the house–the kitchen.
 

Saddle up, put 10 minutes on the clock, and Get Ready…Get set…GO!

  1. Take everything out of the fridge.  (If this feels too daunting, just tackle ONE shelf for now)
  2. Wipe down the inside of your fridge and toss any expired items
  3. Take note of what has piled up in the form of duplicates and what has gone unused.  How can you use what you are noticing to inform your future choices?  For example, I realize that I don’t tend to eat my leftovers.  They pile up until they expire and then I toss them.  Now that I know that about myself, I can make smaller dishes and won’t bother storing leftovers. Hello happy, un-cluttered fridge!
  4. Sort the remaining items, grouping like with like.  Before you put back items back inside, check out this guide for organizing your fridge.  Your food will stay fresh longer if you are strategic about your fridge storage placement.

Give yourself a pat on the back if you took this hoedown over to your freezer and pantry, applying the same process.  Take note of what you tend to over-purchase and what is going unused.

For people who typically keep a high volume of items in the fridge, I suggest containerizing categories for easy access.  These fridge binz are my favorite.  Group like items together so you can grab them all at one.  Common groupings may be condiments, jams & jellies, drinks, and cheeses.  If you have many people using the fridge that need–ahem–reminders about how to maintain the fridge organization, these bins can be labeled.
